The Winter Wind 2012

Island Cottage

Progress is still being made ... albeit at a slower pace.  I am afraid that may be due to encroaching age.  But I am just glad for any progress at this point.  At least it gives me an excuse for being out there ... mostly to appreciate Mother Nature's eternal show.  As usual the best times are dawn and sunset.  With sunset comes the gradual delicate emergence of the star filled skies (for those that notice) ... just lovely.

This year I finished the installation of the composting toilet, including the room under the shed to hold it, and sanded and sanded and polyurethaned and polyurethaned the bedroom section of the cottage.

Many thanks to those that helped with island projects.

Visitors

We had a few visitors from away ... some are shown here (for the others ..sorry I didn't get your picture ... I will next time):

The parents-in-law spoke only Chinese ... but got along fine.

Paula's nephew Mike and wife Amy and Paula with newborn Quinn (not Paula's newborn) ... September

Steve Redux

Steve's 50th high school reunion is  next year.  So in a fit of nostalgia (it wasn't so bad ... and it is remarkable that all  started out together at the same age before they scattered to the winds ...) and as a result of a random email ... I tried to encourage other High School classmates (or perhaps their grandkids) to try to put together a little web page of what they have been doing for the last 50 years.  I know "it is hard to teach old dogs new tricks" but I am trying.  Anyways here are some memories past:

Steve in his prime:
Captain of the university Karate Team.   ~ 1970
Here on a make believe trip to Tahiti (while remaining in my apartment in NYC) ... this mode of "travel" was necessitated by being an impoverished graduate student.
On the side I was a cabbie in the city and got a PhD in Theoretical Physics.

Adventures

Paula did all the traveling this year.  And as a result I mostly spent time around the house and island (for me an enjoyable  default option).  We did do some hikes such as to Acadia in Bar Harbor, Maine.

The Good Bed

Paula has been looking for a platform storage bed ... needing to put those 28 sweaters that are seldom used somewhere ...  So we talked to our favorite furniture / cabinet maker, Dave ... and he made the below bed and bed stands.  Done with a simple efficient design in maple with a natural finish.  An admirable job!  And now ...  no dustballs under the bed!

Green Steve

Some of you may know my dedication to the Green movement ... as demonstrated by my wandering around in public with a wardrobe most would have consigned to the rubbish heap long ago (note the initial picture at the top of this Winter Wind).  These old clothes are just comfortable and if I can get a few more weeks use out of them ... so much the better ... and besides, with my interminable projects I am just going to get them dirtier.
Anyways, I was wandering around Christmastime Bath, Maine ... heading up the sidewalk toward a street hawker that was corralling folks on my side of the street and sending them to the other side to a "free" snack and coffee tent whose purpose was to collect donations for a needy children's group.  The hawker approached everyone ahead of me ... but me ... he just let me pass with an appraising gaze.  Evidently he would have felt embarrassed (or at least recognized the futility) to hit up such an obviously needy adult.  This shows that  my choice in clothes has proved a greater economy than even I had imagined ...

         Paula

has again been visiting family a lot this year.  Her hip replacement operation last year was a success and recovery is  complete.

Paula was selected for a 3 week all expenses paid position as a  "Nanny" ...

for her niece's children ...

Did I mention that it was in London for the entire Olympics ... and involved amongst other things taking the kids to the most exclusive Olympic events !!! ???
What a deal !!!

My Creative Side:  Masterpiece Returned
 2012 Special Supplement

As you may remember from last year ...the bikini below was the pinnacle of my crocheting career.  I made this for my friend Sue about 40 years ago.  Now she is in Alaska where a swimmer needs more protection ... and hence she with great regret but with respect and reverence for the artist ... has returned the bikini to its maker.

As promised ... to better show the potential of my masterpiece ... more beauteous models of the highest standards were sought, found, and kindly agreed to model.  Despite it being politically incorrect ... I did not accept any male models of any standard ... despite offers:

The Original Masterpiece
as modeled by Bear from last year's Winter Wind.

Note the fine lines and delicate coloration of the crocheted work of art.

Ignore the perhaps distracting finer lines of musculature.

Again ...
concentrate on the perfection of the crocheting.
Ignore any other perfections.

Incidentally, note the subtle appreciation and joy in the eyes of the worldly senior citizen (seated on his rollator walker) as he gazes upon the work of art.

Around the House

Paula was busy with the raised beds and the house yard.  In the division of labor, I mostly take care of building systems like roof, water, heating systems ...
We had to replace some raised beds ... those for which Paula will not let me use the new (I think safe) non-arsenic but copper pressure treated wood.  The untreated wood rots out in ~6 years.  A doctor friend of mine said the copper stuff was safe ... and it is easy to see when you have absorbed too much copper -- you turn green.

Sam looking a little subdued ... after getting caught in the trap I set for some marauding skunks.  I baited it with peanut butter on bread.  Sam not only got in and got the bait but managed to turn himself around in the trap.  Later I caught 2 skunks ... drove them 15 miles and dropped them off on some very nice waterfront conservation land  ...
